Biography:
Grace Hopper (1906-1992) was a pioneering American computer scientist and United States Navy rear admiral. She is best known for her work on one of the first compilers, the A-0 system, and for popularizing the concept of machine-independent programming languages.
Hopper earned a Ph.D. in mathematics from Yale University in 1934 and taught mathematics at Vassar College. During World War II, she joined the Naval Reserve and was assigned to the Bureau of Ordnance Computation Project at Harvard University, where she worked on the Harvard Mark I computer.
After the war, Hopper continued to work with computers, developing the first compiler tools. Her work was crucial in the development of COBOL, an early high-level programming language used extensively in business. She championed the idea that programs should be written in a language closer to English, making them more accessible.
Hopper remained in the Navy Reserve after the war and retired in 1986 as a rear admiral at the age of 79, the oldest active-duty commissioned officer in the United States Navy at the time. She received numerous awards and honors for her contributions to computer science.
